A net protects a whole tree. A strip cannot.
Knitted UV stabilised nylon, one inch mesh, cut to size and it will not fray. Two roll sizes.
Spikes protect an edge. A tree, a vegetable bed or an open structure needs a net, because the target is a volume rather than a ledge.
Heavy duty knitted nylon at one ounce per square foot, with a one inch by one inch mesh that keeps birds out while light, rain and pollinators get through.

The reason to net rather than to spike is the shape of the problem. A spike strip closes a line: a gutter lip, a parapet, a fence rail. Fruit on a tree, a raised bed of seedlings or an open barn doorway is a volume, and the only way to protect a volume is to put a barrier around it.
This is knitted nylon rather than the cheap extruded plastic net sold in garden centres. Knitted netting holds its shape under load, and a cut edge stops where you cut it instead of running. That matters because you will cut it.
One inch mesh is the useful compromise. Smaller and it holds leaf litter, catches the wind and needs a real frame. Larger and small birds go straight through.
The mistake worth avoiding: netting laid straight onto the fruit. Birds simply feed through it, and it also traps them against the branch. Drape it over a frame or over the outer canopy so there is a gap, and gather it at the bottom so nothing can get underneath.

Measure the canopy or the bed and add enough to reach the ground on every side, because the gap at the bottom is how birds get in. 16ft x 33ft covers a small tree or a raised bed; 16ft x 66ft covers a row or a larger canopy.
Will it fray if I cut it?
No. It is knitted rather than extruded, so a cut edge stays where you cut it.
What is the mesh size?
One inch by one inch. Small enough to keep birds out, open enough that light and rain get through and it does not act as a sail.
Can a bird get caught in it?
It can happen with any netting that is loose or laid on the plant. Keep it taut, drape it clear of the fruit and gather it at the bottom, and check it after a storm.
Will it stop wasps or insects?
No. A one inch mesh is a bird barrier. Insect exclusion needs a much finer mesh.
Can I use it over a chicken run?
Yes, that is a common use. It keeps wild birds out of the feed, which is the main disease route into a flock.
How long will it last outdoors?
It is UV stabilised for outdoor use. How long depends on your sun and how it is stored between seasons, so we do not put a number on it.
Does it need a frame?
Not necessarily, but a frame is better. Netting on a frame keeps a gap between the mesh and the fruit, and that gap is what stops birds feeding through.
Can I join two pieces?
Yes. Overlap them well and tie along the seam. An unsecured overlap is a door.
Will it survive wind?

Can I reuse it next year?

Is it safe over a pond?
It is used that way against herons. Keep it taut and above the water rather than floating on it.
Will it stop possums or squirrels?
It is a bird net. A determined mammal will chew through it. For a fence line or a rail, a spike strip is the right product.
Can I walk on it?
No. It is not load bearing and it is not a safety net.
Does it come with fixings?
No, and what you need depends on what you are netting. Cable ties, garden twine, tent pegs and cane tops all work.
What colour is it?
Black, which disappears against foliage from a few feet away.

Can I leave it up all year?
You can, but taking it down out of season roughly doubles how long it lasts and lets you get at the plants properly.
How do I stop birds getting under it?
Gather the bottom and weight or peg it. That one step is the difference between a barrier and a shelter.
Is it safe around hedgehogs and small animals?
Keep it taut and off the ground. Loose netting lying on soil is the hazard.
Can I cut a hole for a branch?
Yes, and tie the cut edge closed around it. An open hole is a door.
Will it keep out cabbage whites?
No. Insect exclusion needs a far finer mesh than one inch.
Does it come on a roll?

What if I need more than 66 feet?

Measure the whole shape, not the top
The gap at the bottom is how birds get in. Measure the canopy or the bed, then
add enough on every side to reach the ground, because a net that stops at branch
height is a shelter rather than a barrier.
Keep it off the fruit
This is the mistake that makes people say netting does not work. Netting laid
straight onto a tree lets a bird stand on the mesh and feed straight through it,
and it is also how birds get tangled. Drape it over a frame, or over the outer
canopy so there is a gap between mesh and fruit.
Gather the bottom
Tie it, peg it or weight it. An open hem undoes the whole job in an afternoon.
Check it after weather

after a storm, and if anything has got in, let it out from the bottom rather
