Reflective ribbon that twists and flashes in the wind. It covers an area no strip can reach, for very little money.

Why does it need slack?
Because the flashing comes from the ribbon turning. Pulled tight it cannot turn, and a taut ribbon deters nothing.
Where does it work best?
Open ground with some wind. Vegetable beds, soft fruit rows, boat decks, yards.
Where does it not work?
Still, sheltered spots, and anywhere a bird is roosting on a ledge. Use a spike strip on a ledge.
Do birds get used to it?
Yes. Everything that works by unfamiliarity does. Move it and re-tension it through the season.
How much do I need?
Run it in several lines across the space rather than one line around the edge. A single roll covers a domestic vegetable bed comfortably.
Which pack should I buy?
A single roll for a garden bed, three for a larger plot or an orchard row, ten for commercial ground.
Is it noisy?
It rustles. In a garden that is part of the effect; next to a bedroom window it may be more than you want.
Will it survive rain?
Yes, it is film rather than paper. Wind is what eventually tires it, not water.

Usually for a season or two. It is cheap enough that most people re-run it fresh each year.
Does it work at night?
No. There is no light to reflect. Pair it with a physical barrier if the problem is roosting.
How wide is the tape?

Which side is reflective?
Both. One face is usually silver and the other coloured, and the alternation is part of the flash.
Can I cut it?
Yes, to any length. Tie the cut end off so it does not fray.
Will it stick to itself?
It can if you bundle it wet. Roll it loosely.
How far apart should the lines be?
Close enough that most of the ground has a ribbon in sight, which is usually a few feet apart across a bed.
Can I hang it vertically?
Yes. Streamers hanging from a cane work well over a small bed.
Does it work on pigeons?
On open ground, for a while. On a ledge a pigeon is already using, a spike strip is the answer.
Will it damage plants?
No, but do not tie it tightly around a growing stem.
Can I use it on a boat?
Yes, and it is easily the cheapest thing to try on a deck or a mast.
Is it visible at night?
No. It needs light and does nothing after dark.
Does it degrade in sun?
It gets brittle eventually. A season or two is normal, and it is cheap to replace.

Tie the ribbon between two fixed points and leave it loose. The flash comes from
the ribbon turning over on itself, and a ribbon pulled tight cannot turn. This is
the one thing that decides whether the tape works.
Cross the space, do not edge it
A line around the perimeter leaves the middle open. Run several lines across the
area instead, spaced so most of the ground has ribbon within sight.
Pick a windy spot
No wind, no movement, no effect. In a very sheltered garden, hang it high where
there is more air.
Move it through the season
Birds adapt to anything that is simply always there. Shifting the lines every few
weeks costs nothing and restores most of the effect.
Do not use it on a ledge
If birds are roosting on a gutter, a parapet or a sill, tape is the wrong
product. A spike strip changes that surface permanently and costs less over its
life.
